Part 10

Nujakina drove sedately through town, answering Luui’s questions about police work and doing her best not to smile. I sat next to Luui on the back seat and ran through the sparse details of the cold case I had uncovered in the café. Without faces, or a more personal angle, it was difficult to get invested in the case, and I hoped a visit with Taaviti would provide just that. Nujakina jogged me out of my thoughts as she slowed the patrol car to a stop outside a small, neglected single story wooden house with two broken panes in the kitchen window. She parked the car and turned the engine off, then took a long hard look at Luui as if trying to decide what to do with her.

“I guess she won’t stay in the car,” Nujakina said in English.

“I can English,” Luui said.

“And that’s your answer,” I said, switching back to Danish.

“I thought so.” Nujakina sighed and then jabbed a finger at the extra gear behind the backseat. “There’s a spare police jacket,” she said. “You might want to put it on, and then you can wait around the back with Luui.”

“Around the back?” I said, reaching over the backseat for the jacket.

“In case Taaviti jumps out of the bathroom window.” Nujakina shrugged and said, “He’s done it before.”

“I’m not sure about this, Luui,” I said. I brushed her hair. “Maybe you should stay in the car?”

“I’m a constable.” She plucked at the jacket in my lap. “I should have a jacket.”

“Okay, how about this,” Nujakina said. “You wait here and sit in the front. If Taaviti jumps out of the window, you honk the horn. Okay?”

“Okaaaay…” Luui said with a cautious frown. It was as if she knew she was being cheated, but the chance of sitting in the driving seat was, at the same, appealing.

“You can be the lookout,” I said, offering Nujakina a little help.

“Done,” Luui said. She unclipped her seatbelt and squeezed between the seats to slide behind the wheel just as soon as Nujakina vacated it.

“No sirens,” Nujakina said, removing the keys as she got out of the patrol car. “Just the horn.”

“Got it,” Luui said, although her finger twitched towards the dash and I guessed there would be sirens, horns, and flashing lights just as soon as Luui figured out how to turn them on.

I climbed out of the patrol car and put on the spare jacket, losing the naked feeling as soon as I zipped it halfway. It was silly, but it felt a little like putting on a suit of armour. Once zipped, I was ready for the day.

“Taaviti is harmless,” Nujakina said, once we started walking towards the house. “But he can be a little skittish. We’ve got him for a list of small burglaries, but there are plenty of others he might have done, but we can’t prove it.”

“So he might run?”

“If he thinks we’ve got new information? Definitely.” Nujakina pointed to a narrow path between the house and a small ridge of smooth brown boulders.
